David Hughes is an acoustic guitarist, songwriter, author, playwright and mordant wit. His six albums include, ACTIVE IN THE PARISH, which, in 1997 was named by Q magazine as one of their albums of the year. His five published books include, THE MALDONIANS, and the diary of a UK tour supporting Fairport Convention. His plays, with a determinedly local focus, regularly sell out in Maldon, Essex.

He is also the writer and voice of YouTube sensation "Dengie Boy" and, in the guise of alter ego, Cocker Freeman, was, for three years, a regular weekly contributor to BBC Essex and co-author of the spoof self-help smoker's guide book "Cough Your Way To Fitness".

His sharp, half-spoken delivery and rhythmically-percussive finger-style guitar earned him regular slots on BBC Radio Four's Loose Ends with the late Ned Sherrin.

He has recorded and performed with some of the finest musicians in the UK including Gerry Conway (Jethro Tull / Fairport Convention), Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson, Bert Jansch (Pentangle), Dave Mattacks, Chris Leslie, Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention), Spencer Cozens (Joan Armatrading / John Martyn), Alan Thomson (John Martyn), Chris While, Julie Matthews (BBC Folk Award winners), and Eddi Reader.

He has toured the UK and Europe with Bert Jansch, Pentangle and Fairport Convention. His Internet tour diary, THE FAIRPORT TOUR, published by the Folk Corporation in 1998, sold worldwide.

In 2001, David was the founder member of the St Agnes Fountain project. Together with Chris Leslie (Fairport Convention), Chris While and Julie Matthews (BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winners), the band recorded an album of Christmas music and enjoyed a hugely successful December tour that has now established itself as a "seasonal tradition", the band touring to sell-out audiences each December since with six further albums.

He is about to release his fifth album on the Folk Corporation, "Songs Of Integrity (and other compositions)". A compilation album, RECOGNISED, a good introduction to his work featuring selections from his first four albums, was released in November 2002 and is available with his other Folk Corporation releases on-line from The Folk Corporation.
