Recording For Christmas 2001
Kellie While, Chris Leslie, Julie Matthews & Chris While. David has recently been at Woodworm Studios with Chris Leslie (Fairport Convention) putting down tracks for the sequel to the EP ACOUSTIC CHRISTMAS (TFC 2002). It wasn't a case of the Christmas spirit getting a grip so much as Chris's availability during a hectic Autumn touring schedule with the band. It wasn't just Leslie either. The recordings also feature Chris While and Julie Matthews. The distributors were very keen on the Christmas project but weren't so keen on an EP. Not popular with Johnny Public so the figures say. They wanted an album. The plan therefore is to add to the existing tapes and produce an album ready for Christmas marketing in July 2001. That's the way we work at the coal face of the music industry you see. Among the traditional carols hijacked for treatment by the new quartet (name yet to be decided) there is a stunning Perry Como-ish number: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. David and Chris While duet over Julie's slink-ridden piano and Chris Leslie's violiin. Gerry Conway and Dave Pegg will add that indefinable lounge rhythm section in January it is hoped. What's Kellie While doing there? She turned up for lunch on her way north. So, what do you do. Get mother and daughter to duet on In The Bleak Midwinter or not? It's uncanny, top drawer, telepathic and thought-provoking!" |
Meanwhile... David celebrated his fiftieth birthday with a concert in his home town, Maldon on the 27th October. They came from miles around. Even his former partner, guitarist, Mick Linnard, came on stage to play. Mick had never performed This Other Eden before but it was back to the days of the King's Road from groove one.. David is not performing in the near future although you might hear him on Christmas Day on BBC radio. He's being recorded performing a Christmas carol at an outdoor concert in a couple of weeks time. (For details check the dates page.) He's writing a new set of songs and keeping body and soul together with some corporate work, ie. recording a soundtrack for a large company's answering machine. This includes the message itself. David's voice will be the next non-human on the line. He's tickled pink. The new set of songs, when complete, will see the start of more public appearances. The songs are the core of what will be David's fifth solo album. "I can't quite tell you what is on the way or what the album will sound like. But I think it'll be a change of tack again. You've got to keep the wind behind you, you know." "On Active In The Parish the energy fills the album even though it's just an acoustic guitar and drums. This Other Eden was lush and fun. I like them both. Anyway, apart from the sound, I hope there'll be a strong lyrical content. Moving on. BUT, still a little rhythmo-sardonics to pepper the pot." ![]() |
